You've found the dress! After months of searching, trying on gowns, and imagining the moment you'll walk down the aisle, your wedding dress is finally yours. But something brides don't always think about is how to care for that beautiful gown between bringing it home and walking down the aisle—or what to do with it once the celebration is over.

A little thoughtful planning can make all the difference.

Here are a few practical tips to help keep your wedding dress looking its best, not just on your wedding day, but for years to come.

1. Bringing Your Wedding Dress Home: A Few Important Considerations

First things first: never leave your wedding dress stored in your vehicle, even for a few days.

Cars can reach surprisingly high temperatures, especially during warmer months. Heat and humidity can be damaging to delicate bridal fabrics, and prolonged exposure—particularly inside plastic or synthetic garment bags—can contribute to discoloration and fabric deterioration.

Once you bring your gown home, find a cool, dry, climate-controlled space away from direct sunlight.

Ask your bridal boutique about the best way to store your particular gown. A breathable fabric garment bag is generally preferable for temporary storage, and heavier gowns may need to be stored flat rather than hanging for extended periods.

Your dress deserves a little more consideration than the back of your closet—or worse, the back seat of your car!

2. Schedule Your Alterations Early

If your bridal boutique doesn't offer in-house alterations, you'll want to find an experienced bridal seamstress well before your wedding date.

Bridal styling experts generally recommend beginning alterations approximately two to three months before the wedding, with another fitting around one month before and a final fitting one to two weeks before the big day. More extensive alterations may require additional time, so schedule your appointments early.

And here's an important detail: bring your wedding shoes and the undergarments you plan to wear to every fitting. Both can affect how your dress fits and falls.

One more piece of advice I love: always try your gown on after the final alterations are complete, before taking it home. It's a simple step that can prevent an unwelcome surprise on your wedding morning.

3. Give Your Gown a Little Attention Before the Big Day

Even a beautifully fitted wedding dress may need some preparation before you put it on. Depending on the fabric and how it has been transported or stored, your gown may need professional pressing or steaming.

But remember, not every fabric should be steamed. Delicate silks, taffeta, and certain embellishments require special handling. When in doubt, consult your bridal boutique or a professional familiar with your gown's fabric.

This is one wedding-day detail that's much easier to handle before the excitement begins!

4. Make a Plan for Your Wedding Day

Your wedding day will be filled with beautiful moments, and the last thing you want to worry about is whether your bustle is secure or your train is perfectly arranged. Ask someone you trust to learn how to bustle your dress at your final fitting. Practice it together so you're both comfortable with the process.

Consider keeping a small bridal emergency kit nearby with a needle and thread, fashion tape, safety pins, and other essentials recommended by your seamstress.

And don't forget to build a few minutes into your wedding-day schedule for gown adjustments and touch-ups before important photographs.

5. Decide How You Want to Enjoy Your Wedding Dress for Years to Come

Once your wedding dress has been professionally cleaned, you have a lovely decision to make: what happens to it next? Traditional wedding dress preservation typically involves carefully packaging your cleaned gown in a specialized preservation box for long-term storage. For brides who prefer to tuck their gown safely away, this remains a familiar option. But what if you'd rather continue enjoying the dress you love? That's exactly why I created Mrs Case. Our wedding dress display cases offer a different approach—one that allows you to protect your gown while making it a beautiful part of your home. With UV-rated acrylic, humidity-control features, and thoughtfully designed displays, Mrs Case helps you enjoy your wedding dress long after the wedding day. Whether you choose a traditional preservation box or a Mrs Case display, the important thing is to make an intentional decision about caring for your gown.

Because your wedding dress is so much more than something you wore for one day. It's a reminder of a beautiful beginning, and I believe it deserves to be cared for with that same love and attention.

And if you're anything like me, you may discover that seeing your wedding dress every day brings just as much joy as wearing it did.
